Jazzmeia HornSeit 1997 vergibt die mitgliederfinanziere Nonprofit-Organisation „Jazz Journalists Association“ (JJA) alljährlich Auszeichnungen in insgesamt 39 Kategorien. In diesem Jahr sind Benny Golson, Charles Lloyd und Ahmad Jamal für den „Lifetime Achievement in Jazz“ nominiert, Will Friedwald, Ben Ratliff und Patricia Willard stehen für den „Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism“ zur Wahl. In der Kategorie „Jazz Musician of the Year“ sind Nicole Mitchell, Tyshawn Sorey und Matt Wilson nominiert, zu den Hoffnungsträgern des Jahres, „Up and Coming Musician of the Year“, zählen Jaimie Branch, Maria Grand und Jazzmeia Horn.

In der Kategorie „Record of the Year“ sind „Honey And Salt – Music Inspired By The Poetry Of Carl Sandburg“ von Matt Wilson (Palmetto), „Passin‘ Thru“ von Charles Lloyd (Blue Note), „Bells For The South Side“ von Roscoe Mitchell (ECM) und „Morphogenesis“ von Steve Coleman (Pi) in der engeren Wahl. Beim „Record Label of the Year“ teilen sich ECM Records, Motema Music, Pi Recordings, Resonance Records und Sunnyside Records die Hoffnung auf den ersten Platz. Ohne Keith Jarrett und Chick Corea kommt die Kategorie „Pianist of the Year“ aus: Nominiert sind Fred Hersch, Vijay Iyer und Myra Melford.

Die amerikanische Jazzjournalistenvereinigung vergibt auch einen Preis für das beste Jazzbuch des Jahres. In der engeren Wahl sind „Queen of Bebop: The Musical Lives of Sarah Vaughan“ von Elaine M. Hayes (Ecco), „Good Things Happen Slowly“ von Fred Hersh (Crown Archetype), „Experiencing Chick Corea“ von Monika Herzig (Rowan & Littlefield Publishers), „50 Years at the Village Vanguard: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra“ von Dave Lisik and Eric Allen (Skydeck Music) und „Soul Jazz: Jazz in the Black Community, 1945 – 1975“ von Bob Porter (Xlibris). Für den „Blog of the Year“ sind „Do The Math“ von Ethan Iverson, „Jazz Wax“ von Marc Myers, „Rifftides“ von Doug Ramsey und „Jazz Lives“ von Michael Steinman nominiert. Die diesjährige Verleihung der „JJA Jazz Awards“ wird am 12. Juni in der Arnold Hall des Theresa Lang Community and Student Center in Kooperation mit der School of Jazz at The New School NYC stattfinden.
